The Controversy of Artificial Intelligence in Education

Back in the blog! Welcome, students!

Lately, artificial intelligence (AI) has been one of the hottest topics everywhere. It is brought up in basically all fields or professions, starting from teachers, doctors, researchers, and even politicians. Also nowadays, it's not a surprise to see children being familiar with technology as it has gained a rapid growth of use over the past few years. However, there is still a question that continues to spark controversy among people. Is AI actually beneficial for humans, or is it slowly leading us to something bad?

Well, from the short introduction, we are going to discuss AI! I am 100% sure you have used AI before even though you may not notice it. AI can take different forms, such as ChatGPT, Google Maps, Alexa, and so many other examples. So, from your experience in using it, do you think it is beneficial or not?

In my own view, artificial intelligence was initially invented with a good intention, and that is to help us. Nonetheless, we cannot deny that there are irresponsible people out there who want to use AI for their own amusement. They may use it to scam people, spread false news, or create "deepfakes" for bad purposes.

For that reason, people must learn to use AI responsibly. By “responsibly”, what I mean is that people need consider ethics, social norms, and regulations before using it. They also need to avoid biases, have transparency, and prioritize privacy. This way, AI can function well to reach its desired purpose.

“But how can we educate people about this?” That’s a good question! There are several ways, but some of the things they need to know first are the strengths and weaknesses of AI. It is definitely important for people to know these because even though AI is already mainstream, not everyone knows its potential and drawbacks. So, I would suggest people to read more to always keep up with the development of technology.

Lastly, this issue is very closely related to my personal experience as an education faculty student. It is whether or not AI should be allowed in the classroom. If you ask me, I think the use of AI should be allowed in the classroom under several circumstances. Teachers may set some clear rules at the beginning of a school year. These rules are to limit students’ use of AI and to minimize the chance of misusing it.

To close this blog post, let’s discuss! I have some questions that still haunt me to this day. So, a few days ago, I watched a video about an AI learning to how to walk, and whenever the AI did well, it was rewarded by giving it a positive reinforcement. On the other hand, whenever the AI did bad, it was given a punishment. Now, the questions are: (1) what do positive and negative reinforcements exactly mean in this context? (2) how is it possible for AIs to be rewarded and punished just like living creatures?

Let me know in the comment section, and see you!
