Using Kahoot! as an Instructional Media to Teach English

Hi, students! Do you remember what we discussed on the previous blog? Yes! Last time, we talked about the infusion of IT with ELT. I also shared my experience as well as my ideas for you to apply. This time, we are going to talk about one educational website that you can use for language learning. Just like the picture above, it is Kahoot!

"Can we use Kahoot! as a learning media? Is it really effective?" Sure! However, of course, it depends on how you design and use it. Before I share the strengths and weaknesses of this website, I'll explain first what Kahoot! really is.

Kahoot! is a Norwegian online game-based learning platform. It contains learning games that are known as “kahoots”. It was founded in 2012 by Morten Versvik, Johan Brand, Jamie Brooker who teamed up with Professor Alf Inge Wang. Despite being more than 10 years old, it still is a popular educational website among teachers and learners. So, after knowing about the history a little, it is time to see how to use it!

1. Create an account or sign in to your account if you already have one.
2. Click "Create" on top right.
3. Click "Kahoot" to create a quiz.
4. Choose "Blank canvas" if you want to start from scratch, or choose "Templates" if you want to use existing templates.
5. If you choose to make your own quiz, insert your questions as well as the answers.
6. You can add more questions in other various modes.
7. Don't forget to give your quiz a title and a description.
8. Done! Your quiz is good to go!

Now that you have known the steps to create quizzes in Kahoot!, you should know the strengths and weaknesses of this site. From my experience of using Kahoot!, it has many benefits such as easy to use, very intriguing, has many different modes, and has a unique design. One feature that shines the brightest for me is the design of the website including the layout, the modes, the music, etc. This makes the games interesting for students. Because of this, students are more actively participating in the learning process which is a good way to learn. As for the weakness, I honestly don't see anything that can be improved since the website already has all the features teachers need.

Lastly, Kahoot! is simple to use in the classroom. You can explain the topic first and use Kahoot! to test their understanding. To give a real example, back in my third semester, I taught my classmates about parts of speech because it was a simulation to teach young learners. After the short lecture, I invited them to play the quiz I had prepared. All of them were cheerful and enthusiastic, and they got even more excited when I announced that there would be prizes for the winners. From this experience, I truly recommend using Kahoot! as an instructional media in your class.

  1. Your writing is excellent as always. Moreover, in my opinion, it is nice that you add some triggering questions, such as in your 2nd paragraph. Keep doing your best!
